Recruitment Week

STAT ka ba? paSOC ka na!

Last June 24-27, the UP Statistical Society had its Recruitment Week to look for potential applicants of the organization. This semester’s recruitment was tough because of the difficulty in finding a venue for the recruitment due to the reroofing of the School of Statistics building.

Against all odds, Statsoc still found its way to have good and apt venues for the recruitment. One venue is at the Math Walk where many Stat majors can be found because of their math classes. Another is at the Stat Walk, though only a few Stat majors go there, StatSoc still managed to have signed up few potential applicants. To capture the attention of the Stat majors, the Communications Committee created a banner that says “STAT ka ba? paSOC ka na!”

In line with the recruitment week, StatSocers wore different colors of shirts everyday. Tuesday is for white shirt day, Wednesday for green, Thursday for red and Friday for black.

The recruitment didn’t just end with the setting up of booths in the Math & Stat Walk. The Personnel Committee headed the room-to-room recruitment in Melchor Hall (Eng’g bldg.), School of Economics and College of Social Work and Community Development, for these are the “temporary homes” of the Statistics majors.

By the end of the Recruitment Week, Statsoc had more than 50 Stat majors who signed up.

1st General Meeting, 1st sem AY ’08-‘09

The UP Statistical Society’s 1st general meeting for the 1st semester, AY 2008-2009 was held last June 17 at Balay Kalinaw, 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The opening prayer was led by Erika Joy Valmonte and followed by the opening remarks of StatSoc President Ernest Dominic Buhangin.

Aside from the discussion of what to expect from StatSoc this year, the general meeting also served as a formal welcome to the new members of UP StatSoc. After reciting the preamble with full enthusiasm, 10 new members namely: Nikka, Rofil, Anchor, Dar, Kim, Jana, Janmae, Jem, Mesi, and Monoy took their oath as official members of the organization and the old members gave them a warm round of applause.

After the warm welcome, President Ernest Dominic Buhangin presented the points earned by StatSoc during the FOPC race. He also thanked the members for the help, support, and love they gave to the organization making StatSoc number 1 among 30+ organizations in FOPC ’08-’09. Finance Committee Chairperson Catherine Ann Reyes then presented the points earned by every member. Internal Vice-President Jeran Cuarto discussed the new systems that the Board of Directors will be implementing for the whole academic year.
Each Committee Chairperson was given time to discuss his/her plans for this semester. They prepared a lot of activities and services not only for StatSocers but for non-StatSocers as well. Some of the major changes are having a time-in/time-out sheet that will monitor if a member attended at least 2/3 of the whole event and providing two academic holiday cards. Finance Committee Chairperson Catherine Ann Reyes went back on stage to discuss the sanction for members who did not complete the required number of points in the bagsakan, and the number of Batman tickets that each member should sell.

Special awards were also given during the meeting. Personnel Committee Chairperson Sherine Rivad handed the prizes and certificates of recognition. Ekai, Marvin, Mic, and Tina got the early bird awards. Myra received a certificate of recognition for being the member who first completed the required number of points during the bagsakan period. She was followed by Meia and Berna who also got awards. Certificates were given to StatSoc’s representatives: Han, Jay Anne, and Tina for being StatSoc’s FOPC Steering Committee representatives as well as Ef, Kathy, and NiƱo for being StatSoc’s FOPC race representatives. The race reps then gave FOPC Ad Hoc members a gift as a sign of appreciation.

The most awaited part was the committee announcement. Of all the committee chairpersons, Internal Committee Chairperson Mazhiel Mercader became emotional because three former internal committee members were transferred to other committees. As the members were called, an envelope containing the summer issue of A-hype, an excuse form, and two academic holiday cards were given.

The evening ended through a committee breakdown, wherein the members discussed the upcoming activities, while enjoying the delicious pancit and overflowing iced tea. Again, welcome back StatSocers!

Stat-N-Ekek (Freshie Edition) & Fun Games

The exciting and fun Stat-n-ekek was held last June 21, 2008 at the Vinzon’s rooftop from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Despite the storm and many speculations that the storm will really hit Manila even if it has already changed its direction, many still came. Surprisingly, a number of freshies from Blocks O-1, O-2 and O-3 attended. Freshies and other members met first at the StatSoc tambayan to accompany them to the venue.

Freshies received a warm welcome from the very members of UP StatSoc upon their arrival at the venue. Registration was first done to count the number of freshies who attended. After that, they were paired with a member. Each team consisted of two players. The Masters of Ceremony for the said activity were Nino Paz and Jana Czarina Terrado.

A prayer was made to start the activity with a blessing. The teams were asked to create their own team names. More than twenty teams were made. Rules of the game were read by Vladimir Regoso, Secretary.

Excitement filled the room as they wait for the questions to be read. There were three rounds: easy, average and difficult. K2 team was the one who bagged the 3rd place while team Mang were on 2nd place. And the team that emerged victorious for winning the 1st place was team BA composed of Messy and Sam.

After the very mentally-exhausting but super fun Stat-n-Ekek, it was now time for lunch. Some freshies stayed and were just asked to take their orders for them not to go out anymore.

Come afternoon, Fun Games was held. Since it was raining hard, the BOD just decided to hold the games inside the Vinzons’ rooftop. The games were:

Crossing above the Rope,

Cheese Ring relay,

Mat Race,

Making A Card tower,

Counting of Coins,

Rope Race,

Longest Line

and Body Stuffing.

Teams created were:

Chikee team,

Debbie’s Tribe,

Tomato,

Tactics

and One team.

The team who won 1st place was Tactics, having the shortest time to complete all the games. Prizes were given to all even to those teams that didn't win.

Everyone enjoyed the indoor activity. The purpose of the event which is to bond the freshies and members of StatSoc was truly fulfilled. Yes it rained, but everyone enjoyed.

Alternative Block Class for Freshies/ Lunch Bonding Docu

The ABC was held in Balay Kalinaw (Seminar Room C), 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. The program was started by a prayer and followed by the opening remarks of Ernest Dominic Buhangin, President. Richmon Tiongson, Communications Committee Chairperson, discussed the House Rules on what behavior is to expect from the freshies as listeners. An interactive talk as introduction was conducted by Sherine Rivad, Personnel Committee Chairperson. “Objectives” was tackled by Jeran Cuarto, Internal Vice-President. A fun Ice-breaker was conducted by Lovely Marie Carranza, E.R. Committee Chairperson. After that, Fay Sinocruz, External Committee Chairperson talked about certain topics that would help freshmen to get through with their college life (i.e., how to beat the college freshmen blues, how to seek academic help, how to manage yout time). A role playing courtesy of the FOPC reps and some of the BOD livened up the serious atmosphere of the room. Nino Paz played the main character of the story with Jeanelle Manalo as her supporting cast. The skit was performed as an introduction to the next speaker’s topic, which is also the main topic of the ABC. Invited speaker Third Bagro, a former USC Chairperson and a member of the UP Student-led Alliance Watch Against Hazing (SAWA), talked about anti-hazing. Certificate and token was given to the speaker after his discussion to show appreciation. Lastly, the program ended with a closing remarks delivered by Jeran Cuarto.
It was not yet over for UP StatSoc to bond with the freshies, so they decided to have lunch together with them. And guess what? It was in the popular Mang Jimmy’s where they ate. The table nearly looked like a feast when the food was served. What’s more interesting? All ate their hearts out as they knew that they won’t be paying for the food. FYI: Thanks to Mang Jimmy, StatSoc got 4 liters of Coke.

Mr. and Ms. FOPC Docu

The FOPC just had their back-to-school party entitled PUMP UP @ 100 last June 6, 2008 at the Opus Bar, Metrowalk. The program started at 6 in the afternoon. Bands from UP and other well-known performers livened up the night more as they played their music. Students of UP Diliman from different organizations attended the event to cheer for their beautiful representatives in the search for Mr. and Ms. FOPC 2008. Organizations which participated in the contest were UP PMHS, UP Cineastes’ Studio, UP Arkiforum, UP StatSoc, UP Cursor and UP ZooSoc. Candidates modeled the clothes of Wer art thou, Unschooled Clothing and Urban Juncture.

Our very own, Ms. Regina “Reg” Yap and Mr. Ernest Dominic “Nikko” Buhangin proudly represented UP StatSoc. Nikko, our President, fortunately got into the Top 3 of Mr. FOPC. “Bakit?” was the question asked to Nikko during the Q&A portion on which he answered “Kasi.”. Representatives of UP PMHS emerged victorious for bagging the title of Mr. and Ms. FOPC.

UP StatSoc is very proud of Reg and Nikko for taking courage to participate in the said event. They may have failed to bag the prestigious titles but for UP StatSoc they were true winners for what they did. Congratulations to both of you!

UP StatSoc is also thankful for their SC Representatives namely Han, Tina and Jay Anne for bringing pride to StatSoc through their endless efforts in helping the FOPC this summer.
