welcome back statsocers

“StaSoc Love”. This was the theme for the semstarter of the UP Statistical Society (UP StatSoc) which was held last July 4 at the Cattleya Resort, Antipolo City.

Paul Michael Almeda, UP StatSoc President, gave welcome remarks before the committee presentations started.

The committee presentations featured different famous personalities such as Adam Lambert, Michael Jackson, Barney or Nikko Buhangin, Kris Aquino, Paris Hilton, Aling Dionisia, Gu Jun Pyo, etc. The presentations were a mix of comedy, drama, romance, horror and action.

Games followed the Committee Presentations. First, was the “StatSoc Game KnB?” and next was the calamansi relay. Education and Research Committee won the first game while Group 1 and 3 won the relay.

Winners for the committee presentations will be announced on July 9 (2nd General Meeting).

UPDATES - RECRUITMENT WEEK

A week before the recruitment, a poster saying, “Nahawa ka na ba?” can be seen on the bulletin board intended for the two organizations of the school. Unknown to many, this was part of the StatSoc’s recruitment week. The theme was inspired from the A(H1N1) flu that has been reported to have infected a number of people in the Philippines.

The StatSoc Flu virus began to spread last June 30-July 1, 2009. The Personnel Committee and the members encouraged Stat majors to be part of the epidemic. A booth was set up at the Stat Walk in order to attract possible applicants of the for this semester. There were more than 50 sign-ups by the end of the week.

Indeed, many people have been infected by the StatSoc FLU:

UPDATES – FRESHIE DAY

It is a tradition for us, StatSocers, to prepare a fun-filled activity for freshmen students of the UP School of Statistics at the beginning of each academic year. This year, we had the usual Stat-en-ekek Freshie Edition and Freshie Fun Games, which were highly participated by all three blocks of the school: 01, 02 and 03.

Unlike for the past years, the event was half day to give time for other things like acads and/or rest. Freshies gathered in the tambayan where Personnel Chair Marvin Allan Santos took charge of their registration. The program started at 9:00 AM at the Activity Center of Vinzons Hall last July 29.

The program was composed of the following: a presentation by Niño Joseph Paz and Ericka Mae Mabilin of the ER Committee, introduction of officers and members who were present, AVP by President Paul Michael Almeda, a creative introduction of the participants, the Stat-en-ekek Freshie Ed, snacks, and fun fun fun games.

16 teams consisting of 2 freshies and 1 member (except for homomorphism with 2 members and 1 freshie) contested each other in the stat-en-ekek. Julie & Friends with Julie Baluyot of icom garnered 31 points and ranked First Place. Pretty Group with Jan Paraoan of icom garnered 23 points and ranked 2nd Place. Garnered 22 points and tied for 3rd place were Jim with Jimmy Pelantic of comm2x, Gelai with Angelica Tañedo of exte and Homomorphism with Regina Yap of fin and Karenne Joyce de Padua of icom. External Chair Fatima Han gave the winners their prizes – chocolates.

The day was super hot but the fun was definitely hotter.

Keep the flame burning StatSocers!
