UP StatSoc joins Awitan 2008!

AWITAN 2008: Isang Gabi ng Lungkot at Ligaya

It was at the latter part of the 1st semester when the UP Statistical Society recieved an invitation. It was an invitation to AWITAN 2008, something that is considered new in the organization.

THE FORMATION OF THE STATSOC CHORALE

After several discussions, it was decided that the organization will participate in the said competition. The next thing to do was to form the chorale. A sign up sheet was posted at the tambayan for those who are willing to join. This was done before the end of the 1st semester. Finally, the Statsoc Chorale was formed with the following people on the list:

In line with this, it was also decided to form a group that will be performing functions that are related to the event. They are as follows:

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: Niño Paz
DOCUMENTATION AND LOGISTICS DIRECTOR: Tina Cortel
EXTERNALS DIRECTOR: Fatima Han
CREATIVE DIRECTOR: Carla Pizzaro

After this, the chorale had a meeting that would decide their chosen piece. There were a lot of choices but in the end, the group decided to sing “Kung Mawawala Ka” as the chosen piece.


REHEARSALS

Rehearsals were originally scheduled on Mondays and Tuesdays. But at the first week of December, it was decided that there will also be a rehearsal on Thursdays as well.

The Ipil Residence Hall and Vinzon’s Rooftop served as the practice place for this newly formed chorale. It was in these times that they learned their respective notes and improved themselves as time went by.


But, it didn’t end there. Little did the chorale people know, the executive director has planned something for them---THE WEEK OF CHALLENGES. As the name implies, they were presented with challenges that would test how much they have improved during rehearsals. One of these challenges is the DROP PIECE CHALLENGE. Also, they were surprisingly requested to sing “Kung Mawawala Ka” at the 2nd General Meeting as one of the challenges.

The last rehearsal was held at Balay Kalinaw in which polishing of choreography and tones were done.

The STATSOC chorale has Ms. Christine Villafranca as their conductor and trainor.


CONTEST PROPER

The competition was held at SM North EDSA Cinema 6 last December 13, 2008, 7pm. The 9 competing choirs(7 Engineering orgs and 2 non-engineering orgs) were expected to sing their chosen piece with the Telenovela as the theme and Jingle bells Calypso as the contest piece.




They were judged by respected personalities and at the end of the competition the winners were announced. They are as follows:

1st Place: UP IE Club
2nd Place: UP CIEM
3rd Place: UP CURSOR

The AWITAN 2008 was organized by UP KEM in line with the activities of the Eng’g Week.



(It was known that the UP StatSoc chorale could have probably went up the stage too for placing 4th in the competition. Not bad for 'first-timers'. )

The UP StatSoc deeply appreciates everyone who participated in this new and successful event. Should they decide to continue to join in the competition again, the whole organization is willing to give its full support to them.
